Hannes Pohlit

Hannes Pohlit (born 1976 in Heidelberg) is a Leipzig-based German composer and pianist. His sound-sensual and melodic music is based on the free-tonal musical styles of the 20th century, represented in particular by Paul Hindemith, Benjamin Britten and Hans Werner Henze, and results from a fundamentally romantic and expressive understanding of art with the sound ideal of a complex, natural beauty. Sounds of nature: the rustling of water and leaves in the wind, sounds of insects and birdsong become the starting point of inspiration in his works such as the Chamber Symphony, the Sinfonietta per grande orchestra Il Vento, the Clarinet quintet Nel Fiume eterno, the pan-religious cycle Contemplations for cello and chamber orchestra as well as the piano trio Les Lumières de la Nuit, creating a surreal dream-world in widely diversified sounds. The main line of Hannes Pohlit’s style can be characterized by hymn-like, wide-ranging melodies and a dense network of wave-like figures. With the neo-romantic crossover experiment Paraphrases de Tango sur des mélodies de Carlos Gardel for piano solo, a side line of his musical production has developed since 2012, in which further (tonal) solo works and the two piano concertos Tango-Concerto and Concerto in E, inspired by the Argentine tango, have been created: the first Concerto also as a sensitive approach to the composer Sergei Rachmaninoff and as a homage to the historical virtuoso salon style. This should not be understood as pandering to popular music but as an expansion of his compositional technique and range of expression, also with the interest to develope virtuosity in the technical aspect on the highest level. As a composer and pianist, Hannes Pohlit has worked with the Thuringian Symphony Orchestra, the Loh Orchestra Sondershausen, the RNCM Manchester Orchestra, the Thuringian Philharmonic Gotha-Suhl, the Leipzig Symphony Orchestra as well as with the Mitteldeutsches Kammerorchester and with conductors such as Roland Böer, Oliver Weder, Daniel Huppert, Markus L. Frank, Robbert van Steijn and Wolfgang Rögner. As a concert pianist, Hannes Pohlit has performed in several European countries and maintains a virtuoso repertoire ranging from Franz Liszt to Sergei Rachmaninoff and the music of the 20th century. In 2021 he released his debut CD on the classical label “querstand” with the 1st piano sonata by George Enescu, the Fantasy and Fugue on the Chorale Ad nos, ad salutarem undam (Liszt-Busoni) and the Lucy Escott Variations by Hans Werner Henze. As a conductor with a rich repertoire ranging from classical-romantic music to the present, he conducted many symphony orchestras and several opera theatres. He was the Artistic Director of the “ensemble leipzig 21” and led various premieres of contemporary composers such as Georg Katzer, Hans-Christian Bartel, Marco Nikodijevic and Gordon Kampe.

Seine klangsinnliche und melodische Tonsprache knüpft an die freitonalen, besonders durch Paul Hindemith, Benjamin Britten und Hans Werner Henze vertretenen Musikströmungen des 20. Jahrhunderts an und resultiert aus einem grundsätzlich romantischen Ausdrucksbedürfnis mit dem Klangideal einer komplexen naturhaften Schönheit. Mit dem neoromantischen Crossover-Experiment Paraphrases de Tango sur des mélodies de Carlos Gardel für Klavier solo hat sich seit 2012 eine Nebenlinie seiner musikalischen Produktion gebildet, in der inzwischen weitere (tonale) Solowerke und die beiden vom argentinischen Tango inspirierten Klavierkonzerte Tango-Concerto und Concerto in E entstanden sind: ersteres auch als eine sensible Annäherung an den Komponisten Sergei Rachmaninoff und als Hommage an den historischen virtuosen Salonstil. Dies sollte nicht als Anbiederung an die Unterhaltungsmusik verstanden werden sondern als eine Erweiterung seiner Kompositionstechnik und Ausdruckspalette, verbunden mit dem Ehrgeiz, die pianistische Spieltechnik auf der höchsten Stufe weiter zu entwickeln. Als Komponist und Pianist arbeitete Hannes Pohlit zusammen mit den Thüringer Symphonikern, dem Loh-Orchester Sondershausen, dem Orchester des RNCM Manchester, der Thüringen Philharmonie Gotha-Suhl, dem Leipziger Symphonieorchester sowie dem Mitteldeutschen Kammerorchester und mit Dirigenten wie Roland Böer, Oliver Weder, Daniel Huppert, Markus L. Frank, Robbert van Steijn und Wolfgang Rögner.
